American Mary is coming!

We’re pretty thrilled to be able to announce that the buzziest horror film of recent times will be screening at Stranger With My Face this year, with thanks to festival sponsor Monster Pictures.

American Mary has picked picked up over 15 international awards including Best Picture at Screamfest, Toronto After Dark and Shudder Fest.

Jen and Sylvia’s first feature, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, screened at the festival last year, and it’s great to able to continue the association with these bold and original indie filmmakers.

If you enjoyed the stylistic flourishings and strange humour of Dead Hooker, you’ll certainly love Mary.

At the same time, this second feature from the Soskas is a massive step up in terms of production values and artistic ambition, so it’s a pretty different experience as well.

One major plus of this film is that it stars the excellent Katharine Isabelle, of Ginger Snaps fame. Continue reading

Horror filmmaking boot camp in Hobart

Have you registered for the 48-Hour Taploitation Challenge yet?

If not, what the heck are you waiting for?

It’s the most fun film comp in Australia right now and the chances for glory are many. We’ll be announcing some of the big name judges in coming days…but trust us, you will want these people to see your work! (Or not see it, as the case may be…but hey, you can always hide under the seat).

In the meantime, here’s something pretty exciting to give local Challengers an unfair advantage.

48-Hour Tasploitation Challenge launched

Only a few days later than promised, we’re pleased to able to give you the lowdown on a new event for us this year, the 48-Hour Taploitation Challenge.

A 48-Hour filmmaking comp with a difference (or two), the Challenge is likely to be lots of fun for the participants… although, let’s face it, slightly gruelling as well.

You can read all about it here… and sign up if you think you’ve got what it takes!

Registrations close at 12 noon on Friday 8 Febuary, but you’d be well advised to get in quick. Places for Tasmanian participants are limited!

(Why? Because Tasmanian teams are guaranteed to have their work screened at the Awards Night on 7 March, while interstate and overseas teams are not…)

The principal supporter of the Challenge is Events Tasmania, and we thank them for that! Screen Tasmania is the principal supporter of the festival.

Oh yes, and here’s a bit of inspiration courtesy of our resident make-up FX guru…
